// THE GRAVEYARD OF THE ATLANTIC //

Diamond Shoals Light Station is located 13 miles off the coast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. This area is called the Graveyard of the Atlantic, due to the numerous shipwrecks in the area. There have been over 1,000 recorded shipwrecks, dating back to the 1500’s. These dangerous, ever-changing shoals are the result of the meeting of northern cold currents and the southern warm currents. The mixing of these currents causes turbulent waters and constant shifting of the shoals, which was a challenge for early mariners. DSLS and the preceding light ships were placed into service to help in navigation of this area and helped make the area safer for the passage of ships. The DSLS was built as a safe haven in these waters!
